STUART, VA— Patrick County is pleased to announce the appointment of James Houchins as the
Director of Economic Development and Tourism. He assumed his new position on July 1.
Houchins previously served as the Director of Tourism for Patrick County and before that worked in the
Parks and Recreation Department.
He has a diverse professional background, including roles in sales and management. He holds a
Bachelor’s degree from Averett University in Business Administration.
A Patrick County native, James is a fierce advocate for citizens and businesses. His passion for Patrick
County and his ability to forge partnerships will undeniably contribute to the county’s success. During
his tenure as Director of Tourism he has implemented new initiatives such as the annual Tourism
Summit, the YouTube series “The People, Places, and Performers of Patrick County,” and regularly
contributes to The Enterprise through the column “Tourism Talks.” He also worked in collaboration
with Floyd and Franklin Counties to develop Virginia’s Mountain Spirits Trail, among other increased
marketing efforts.
As the Director of Economic Development and Tourism, Houchins will lead efforts to attract new
businesses, support existing enterprises, and create a vibrant economic landscape for Patrick County.
With high-ranking public and higher education institutions, the generational US 58 project, and Patrick
County’s natural assets and safe community make it poised for progress.
“James isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and address issues that are affecting Patrick County citizens and
businesses. When it was announced that Mabry Mill would not be offering dine-in food service for the
2024 season he brought together the National Park Service, Virginia Department of Transportation, the
Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the Blue Ridge Parkway Association to meet with citizens and
businesses in the Meadows of Dan community to ensure that businesses were aware of the opportunities
available to them through these organizations. The meeting was positive and provided hope in what was
previously seen as a detrimental situation.,” said County Administrator Beth Simms.
“I am honored to take on this new responsibility,” said Houchins. “Patrick County has immense
potential, and I look forward to collaborating with local businesses, community leaders, and
stakeholders to drive sustainable growth.”
Houchins currently serves on the board of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and Blue Ridge Parkway
Association and is in the process of completing Virginia Rural Center’s Virginia Rural Leadership
Institute.
